Description: This is a truly wonderful piece. Several years ago I purchased a trunk that dated to the 1850's and this hat it was with some other antique items that dated to the late 1800's, so based on that and the style of it I am assuming that this hat is of that era. It is made of a material that appears to be some sort of a woven straw but so finely done that it has an almost fabric type feel to it. It has a black band around it with a flower attached, the inside has a leather hat band lining, it has the original label which says "Calumet, Dleu et mon Droit, Monisoit Qu? Mal Y Pense", it measures 12 1/2" long by about 11 1/4" across, the inside of the hat where it rests on the head measures about 16 1/2". The craftsmanship of is so good that I am guessing it was probably an expensive piece for that era and it appears to have been carefully cared for. It is in excellent condition, there is ever so slight wear marks on the inside of the headband, the flower is tacked on and is just a bit loose on the top. It comes from a smoke free home and would be a beautiful addition to your collection!
