Description: Here is a most unusual and very distinctive sterling silver compote topped by a pretty bowl decorated with chased work in the neo-classical style and resting on an exquisitely-detailed base featuring the figure of an exceptionally well-made bull. Every rippling muscle on the bull's sturdy body has been clearly and meticulously defined and his horns, facial features, hooves and gracefully arched tail have all been carefully and skillfully rendered with great accuracy and precision. He stands majestically upon a wonderfully-crafted assymetrical base suggestive of a rocky promontory and intricately decorated with a profusion of organic flora and fauna in the Art Nouveau style. These leaves, grasses and flowers have all been realistically and expertly crafted with extraordinary attention to detail and continue all around the base, the back being as beautifully detailed as the front, a sure sign of fine workmanship and design. Behind the bull, the stem supporting the bowl above has been cleverly crafted to represent a tree trunk, the roots of which can be seen amidst the naturalistick forms on the base. The graceful bowl has been prettily enhanced by be-ribboned garlands of leaves and berries which continue around its entire surface. A nicely-detailed ram's head fromed by a pair of curling horns appears on each side of the bowl. The contrast between the textured surfaces of the figural forms and the base with the smoothness of the shining shallow bowl is both striking and effective. The compote is in excellent condition with a nice patina on the bowl and crisp, clearly defined details on all the textured and figural elements. Oval cartouches on the back and the front of the bowl have not been monogrammed and show no signs of mono removal. The stamp of Minerva's head can be clearly seen on the bowl, showing that the piece was made in France. This is an extremely well-made item and a great conversation piece. It measures approx. 9" in diameter at the top and stands approx. 8 1/4" tall. It weighs a substantial 34 troy ounces.
