Description: A French Mourning Hair Art from the late 19th.C set in a black ebony oval frame with convex glass and brass trim. The most unusual piece has dark brown woven hair shaped into a cross. Two banners rise from the base of the cross and bear the French words “Au ciel le rendez vous” or “to heaven … you return”. Now, my French just barely gets me through the train stations, into a rental car, and into my hotel; so any corrections will be gladly accepted. The cross shape and small banner add such meaning to this wonderful example of mourning hair art. There are some loose pieces of hair, but keep in the shape formed by the woven hair. Condition; the ebony frame and convex glass are in good shape. I find only minor nicks on the frame in keeping with the age. Measurements: 4 ½” X 4”
