Description:
This fine example demonstrates the marriage of artistic achievement with functionality. The pommel is cast with egg shaped panels flanked by raised splaying dividers. The latter motif is repeated on the quillon block and both sides of the shell guards. All hilt elements are hand finished with scrolling foliage and geometric motifs on plain and stippled backgrounds. The details are produced with a number of techniques employing various instruments including punches, burins, and burnishers. The entire hilt including the silver wire wrapped grip was heavily overlaid in gold to produce a dazzling effect. The blade is perfectly plain as made, embodying the latest features including a dramatically widened forte sharply necking to a straight taper out to the point. That form is now referred to as a colichemarde and this example demonstrates it at its extreme. Blade length: 29 3/8"
