Description:
This gorgeous solid-oak coffee table was hand-crafted in France around 1890. The oak displays an incredible rich complexion and distinct grain, each having grown more distinctive and pronounced over the years as the wood has developed a lovely patina. An intricately hand-carved base as well as hand-carved edging showcase the fine quality of the oak as well as the skilled craftsmanship that was responsible for charming Old World pieces like this. It appears that, at one point in time, the table was an extending table of some sort, since the table is clearly composed of two halves and underneath the table top is a structure that appears to have once facilitated the movement of two outer leaves for the addition or subtraction of extra leaves. This appears to be a common feature of tables of this sort, and underscores the incredible history that this charming piece bears. Moreover, the extra structural support beneath the table contributes to its unusual strength and fortitude, which no doubt will help carry this piece far into future generations, although it has sustained surface wear consistent with age. A fantastic specimen of French craftsmanship as well as the perfect size for a coffee table, this fox head table would make a fine addition to any home!
