Description: Long Tapestry Scene Depicting the Interior of a French Chateau An Antique French, Framed Machine Made Horizontal Tapestry Depicting a Scene of the Interior of a French Chateau – Very good Condition – European Oak Frame has minor loss to interior gilded border - Circa 1900. This fabulous French scene depicts the interior of two rooms in a chateau. The styles in the room are from different time periods. A group of people are sitting at a Renaissance style table taking a break from their needlepoint that is spread across the table. Through the wooden arched doorway in the back room, a lady with a tray is serving a gentleman, who is very hard at work with “something” on the table! To the left forefront is a young man pouring wine or water from the round cooling pot in the center front. There are numerous framed paintings on the plastered stone walls as well as low wainscot paneling surrounding the room. The flooring is diagonally laid stone. The windows are leaded squares topped with gothic arches in wooden surrounds. The mantel’s opening has decorative tiling to its interior surround and back. An iron fireback placque leans against the back, to throw the heat from the fire into the room. The sides of the mantel are highly decorated wooden pilasters. The andirons have horizontal rods for hanging cooking pots over the fire. There is also a ruffled skirt beneath the mantel’s lintel to absorb drafts and atop the mantel is a painting leaning against the mantel’s trumeau. This wonderful framed machine made tapestry will be a delightful conversation piece in any room. H=27, L=71 7/8 Please contact us if you would like more photos or information.
