Description: 18th century French carved solid genuine ivory crucified Christ sculpture. The sculptor is mounted on a carved gilt wood cross with incised floral motifs set within a carved gilt wood and mirrored frame. The Christ carving and ivory have a rare primitive quality; with exceptional details to the anatomy and rendered in a live pose.The nails are all bronze and the ivory 'Inri' scroll at the top is all original. The four mirrored panels are mounted on a dark red velvet backing and all origianl to the piece, the frame is an ornate and deeply carved frame with foliage and religous symbols atop. The ivory has developed a warm yellow patina as only old ivory can do. A true relic, treasured and coveted. Measures just a bit under 24" tall by 12" wide and the Christ itself is 6 1/2" tall with a 5" wide arm span.
