Probably Germany or France. The large oval plaque is finely painted with a portrait of a gentleman in Late 17th-Early 18th C. dress wearing a wig, pink bow, blue sash and gilded armor on a brown ground. The plaque appears to be a portrait of either Joseph Leopold, Duke of Lorraine (1679-1729) or possibly that of Louis XIV (1638-1715), King of France who returned control of Lorraine to Leopold in 1697 under the dispositions of the Treaty of Ryswick. The plaque is mounted within a simple brass rim fitting in a conformingly shaped ebonized wood frame which has been painted gold. The back of the plaque is marked in pencil and in pen on a taped sticker label: "Duke di Lorraine - Lord Balfron (or Belfrom) Collection. Presented to him by the English Government on his 70th Birthday". The back of the plaque is incised "P1" and what appears to be an impressed "510". Ref: /Leopold%2C_Duke_of_Lorraine Dimensions: Framed Plaque: 16-5/8" High, 12-3/4" Wide, 1" Deep. Porcelain Plaque: 12" High, 8-1/2" Wide. Total Weight: 3.4lbs. (54oz.) Condition: There are a few small surface chips/losses along the left edge/rim of the plaque measuring 1/4" long which has been lightly over painted (probably caused by rubbing against the brass rim). There is a small loss to the paint along the right border/edge of the plaque (just above the right shoulder) measuring about 1/4" long (has been lightly over painted). There is some light oxidation/wear to the brass rim around the edge of the plaque. There is considerable chipping/wear to the gold paint along the surface of the wood frame. There is a crack along the base of the carved wood frame (along with a repaired crack to the right of the crack). There is some dirt/dust to the back of the porcelain plaque and wood frame. Otherwise, the piece is in good condition.
