Item Description:
This is a handsome antique English solid oak lead glazed showcase display cabinet. Its top surface is in very good condition even though it has very minor scratches and it features a cabinet that has 3 shelves, 2 adjustable, and the bottom shelf can be used to display plates. It has 2 beautiful *astragal lead glazed glass doors with decorative stained glass and it has a lovely brass pull. In addition it has very attractive cabriole legs with pad feet. This piece may show minor age appropriate signs of wear including a hole on its back which is not distracting at all and can be easily repaired otherwise it is in very good cosmetic and structural condition and it is strong and sturdy.
What is astragal (wood or lead) glazing? As it pertains to later period furniture, it is a method of securing glass to the straight, semi-circular, or shaped moldings found on glass doors and windows of furniture. On newer reproduction furniture, the astragal molding may set atop the glass to give the appearance of glazing where on older English furniture, it is not uncommon for each piece of glass to be cut to shape and glazed into the molding.
