Description:
Every respectable household would have a set of these essential letter scales during the late Victorian period, around 1890, which is when this set was produced. Wonderful to have a solid Mahogany base rather than the Oak which is what they are made from. This one has a lovely serpentine shaped front and stands on it's original four turned bun feet. It also retains it's original price label for five shillings or around 50 cents USD! The top of the scale has the basic letter rate engraved onto the letter pan or plate, " Postal Rates For Letters - Not Exceeding 4oz - 1D". The front of the scale is also engraved "Warranted Accurate". The brass remains with it's wonderful antique patina that can only come with age, there are a few ink spots to the wooden base. Excellent condition with a complete set of weights, measuring 7 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 3 3/4: tall. Worldwide insured airmail included.
