Description: This beautiful mahogany bookcase was hand-crafted in England around 1940 by the famous Globe-Wernicke Company. Only the finest materials have been used, crafted together in a classic, professional design that keeps collectors combing the antique market for these famous bookcases even today. The mahogany displays a deep, rich lustre enhanced by years of developing a lovely patina. It is especially significant that mahogany was used in this piece, since it was more expensive and better-made than oak varieties. In part, this owes to the fact that oak would have been locally grown at the time, whereas mahogany was imported, so naturally mahogany was considered more valuable; moreover, greater care and attention would have been given to a bookcase crafted from a more expensive wood. Brass straps run along the sides, forming a wonderful complement to the mahogany, and each of the doors lifts up and slides on a small metal rail. Some of the doors slide with difficulty and do not close all the way, the bottom stand is missing, and the top four sections are screwed together. Otherwise condition remains excellent, with very little surface wear and a remarkably strong structure. This elegant Globe-Wernicke bookcase will continue to function in beauty and style for generations to come--so don't miss your chance to own this fine piece of English craftsmanship today!
