This gorgeous Celluloid Comb is one that I bestow the most. The exquisite detailing of the head of this comb with scroll work and beading makes this an exceptional find. The comb measures as follows; 5 1/4 inches long, and the decorative head is 1 1/2 inches wide, the length of the decorative head is 2 1/4 inches long, circa late 1800's.

Celluloid: The earliest synthetic plastic as celluloid discovered in mid 1850's but developed in the early 1870 by John Wesley Hyatt from nitro-cellulose and camphor. He hoped to find a material for billiard balls. But the celluloid he found was too brittle, but by the end of the century was widely used for all sorts of household items including buttons and shuttles.
