ANTIQUE CHINESE REVERSE PAINTING OF CHILDREN
A beautiful and detailed antique Chinese reverse painting on glass, dating from the late 19th or early years of the 20th century. Reverse paintings are painted on the reverse of a piece of glass which is used as the canvas. The painting depicts three young children at play, one playing a reed flute, one dancing, and one balancing a tree branch in his hand. The expressions on the children's faces are well-executed and reflective of the joyful and carefree days of youth. Composition is excellent as well. The subject is unusual for reverse paintings, and is rarely seen in modern copies of earlier Chinese reverse paintings. Most reverse paintings seen today are copies of original 19th and early 20th century works such as this one, and were almost never signed by the artists. The most common subjects were portraits of the Emperor and Empress, and scenes from nature. This piece is in excellent condition with brilliant colors, and is guaranteed to be an early one, not a late 20th century copy. Overall dimensions are 22" high by 16.25" wide. The original brass hanging piece of hardware is in excellent condition also. Additional photos are available upon request.
