Description: Antique Peking from Northern China, first quarter of the twentieth century This lovely antique Peking preserves the traditional Chinese repertoire of the great early Ningshia carpets from the workshops of Imperial China. This emerges in the classic openwork floral medallion, in the motifs scattered across the field, the so-called 'hundred antiques,' and in the inner meander border. The outer border of cartouches, however, like the cornerpieces of the field, betrays the influence of Persian design from further west, although transformed into a distinctive Chinese form. The soft palette of golds, blues, and greens is also classically Chinese, and these colors look especially beautiful set against the abrashed chocolate ground.
