Description:
Awsome antiquity 18th century fire back or stove plate , impressed design is very simple having only a column topped with a flame above on each side it measures 13 ½” x 13 ¼” x1/8” thick ,It is in very good condition all things considered, as you might notice it has a somewhat rusted corner on each side of the bottom whare the paint or finish had probably worn.I happen to have a deep affection for these particular items, , It is unfortunate that there is so little information available on early fireplace equiptmentFirebacks are among the most interesting products of early American iron works- Ironworks constituted one our earliest colonial crafts- the flat plates crudely cast in relief designs once served as stove plates & fire backs-Dating from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century. Despite the primitive character these designs are often highly Imaginative & reveal a fine quality of artistic balance & decorative effect & ingenuity. The making of these plates was a relatively simple process –sure we can say that now !!The patterns were first carved in wood then-they were pressed into wet sand ,which took the exact imprint of the wood model, then into the mold molten iron was poured. When the metal cooled, the result was a cast iron plate bearing the design carved into the wood. You can use this primitive decorative just about anywhere & for any purpose ,search fire place architectural fire stove classical column cast iron foundry forged
