Antique c1880 VICTORIAN FOLDING CHILDs PICNIC CHAIR Album Album Album Album Album Antique c1880 VICTORIAN FOLDING CHILDs PICNIC CHAIR ITEM DESCRIPTION This is a fantastic c1880 Victorian child's chair. It's made to look like the campaign chairs that military officers used to take into the field with them. It's probably English and is beautifully carved ... it appears to be made of cherry with a natural finish. It has an ornately carved and turned back and t are inlaid bone buttons along the sides which add a very attractive accent. It is upholstered with a striped fabric that we think is cotton duck and is bordered with silk braided ribbon. The upholstery is obviously newer than the chair - the upholstery is in great condition and goes nicely with the chair. Note that the upholstery is hand stitched and beautifully crafted. The chair scissors closed and folds completely flat ... which is why we think this was probably originally intended to be a picnic chair for a child -- if it were larger, we'd say it was definitely an officer's campaign chair. In this diminutive size (dimensions are below), it may have been made for the child of an officer ... perhaps copying his chair? This brilliant chair would make an exceptional accent piece in your home ... especially for the doll or bear collector. It could also seat your child at a picnic -- it is probably sturdier than today's folding plastic chairs and a lot more forgiving than a metal chair! Age (ca.) c1870-1890. Upholstery is probably not more than 10 years old. Dimensions It measures 14" X 24" X 30" High; . It folds to a depth of 6" Condition Good condition. The upholstery is in good shape - no wear, no spots. The wood is in excellent condition with a rich, warm patina and original finish. T are some character marks on the wood, around the feet, which are age and use appropriate but t 's nothing on this magnificent chair that would constitute damage. Provenance This item is from a lovely old sprawling Victorian home on Long Island's north shore. The owners are retiring and moving south and giving up some of the treasures that have been in their family for multiple generations. Apparently, at one time this was an extremely wealthy family ... they had multiple sets of china, an enormous amount of quality silver and other decorative accessories that spoke of 'old money'. The pieces from this estate are "fresh" to the market, having just come from the home of the family that have owned their pieces for generations. Please scroll down for more photos and any of them.
