Description:
A wonderful clean example of an English Victorian lap desk or writing slope, dating to around 1870. The wood is stunning burl walnut with intricate inlay to the top and front, there is also beautiful inlaid detail to the edges, all intact and without loss. The escutcheon to the top is inlaid Mother of Pearl (tiny chip to MOP although insignificant) and again with Tunbridge Ware surround. Below this on the sloped top, there is another Mother of Pearl plate which acts as a cartouche for personalization. The interior has several compartments, a lidded compartment for all sorts of accessories, pens, seal, sealing wax, nibs etc. There are two period inkwells with screw top lids, not matching but both antique of the correct ear and a real bonus to present. The top half of the slope opens for to reveal a large compartment for storage of stationery and letters. All in all, a superb example in wonderful condition, a good glossy patina showing of the beauty of the woods. Measuring 11 3/4" x 9" x 3 3/4" high. Worldwide insured airmail included.
