Description: The Soldier’s Story by Warren Lee Goss. Boston: I.N. Richardson and Company, 1871. Originally issued just after the war, this was one of the most influential and read volumes regarding the terrors of rebel prison camps. The title page reads – “The Soldier’s Story of his captivity at Andersonville, with the numbers of their graves, their rank, the companies and regiments to which they belonged, the dates of their decease, and the diseases of which they died. And also, many certificates to the truthfulness of the book. Embellished with a beautiful presentation page and four full page illustrations, by Thomas Nast, the celebrated American artist; a steel portrait of the author; several maps drawn from actual measurements, and many accurate illustrations of prison life, taken from rebel photographs now in possession of the publishers.” The interesting part about this book, besides the intriguing story told within its pages, is the presentation page. As the title page says – it was done by the artist Thomas Nast. It is fabulously eerie and terrifying. What is interesting is that it is presented to Mrs. Grieves signed by Warren Lee Goss which is written in pencil. There are four other full page Nast illustrations of the horrors of prison along with a tissue guarded portrait of Goss frontispiece opposite the presentation page. The appendix contains a list by state of the Union soldiers who died at Andersonville delineating the numbers on their graves, their regiments, the dates of their deaths, and the diseases from which they were died along with a map of Andersonville. The cover is of a forest green cloth over board with beveled edges along with decorative gilt and gilt lettering on the spine. The cover is quite worn with a lot of scuffing, spotting and edge wear. The binding has come loose – the ffep has split along with the front inner hinge. The back hinge is sturdy and tight. The book block itself is sturdy and strong. There is a POS on the title page written in green ink. 8vo Octavo (8 5/8” tall). Great book! Striving For Excellence It isn’t brilliance or just getting the breaks, It is consistent attention to & honest respect for the Customer.
