Description:
Under Both Flags: A Panorama of the Great Civil War. This is a fabulous book! Such a wealth of information here not to mention the numerous (and I mean numerous) illustrations. The title page reads as follows: “Under Both Flags: A Panorama of the Great Civil War. As represented in story, anecdote, adventure, and the romance of reality. Written by celebrities of both sides; the men and women who created the greatest epoch of our nation’s history. An unprejudiced representation of the issues that divided our country, as told in the personal recollections of those who participated in the campaigns, marches, sufferings, anecdotes, and instances of dauntless heroism which glorified and ennobled this gigantic struggle for the supremacy of the Union. Gorgeously illustrated with about 250 superb illustrations from photographs and drawings accurately picturing the scenes described. Copyright C.R. Graham, 1896. People’s Publishing Company, Philadelphia, PA.” This magnificent folio covers everything! The gilt title on the front cover reads Tales of the Civil War which is very different from the title page. There is a split to the fabric on the lower spine. The front end leaf separated some time ago and someone taped it together – thus the binding isn’t very sturdy. It is somewhat intact but very loose. The hardcover binding has some sunning to all the edges and is a bit dirty. The gilt for the lettering and pictorial has worn off quite a bit too. The text and illustrations are very good though. The photographs are to-die-for! So as you can see the binding has seen better days but the story and illustrations within its pages are worth its weight in gold!
