Description:
The Bondman by Hall Caine. New Edition. Pub: New York D. Appleton and Company 1896. This fabulous story is broken down into three separate books – The Book of Stephen Orry; The Book of Michael Sunlocks; and The Book of Red Jason. This is one of Caine's popular Manx novels set on the Isle of Man, where he resided, but which were not much appreciated by the local populace who felt intruded upon. Not only is the story told within the pages of this book fabulous but the binding/cover is aesthetically pleasing. It has a half leather morocco cover with a perfectly contrasting marbleized gloss paper trimmed in gold gilt. The spine is spectacular with gilt décor and gilt lettering. The gilt décor is elegant, delicate and sophisticated. The condition is good. The head of the spine is frayed and there is some scuffing and rubbing to the morocco spine edges. There is a water stain on the tail of the spine heading towards the back cover. There is also edge wear to the corners and edges. The binding is good and still intact. The pages have some browning and foxing. The top edges are gilt. The book is duodecimo. This book would look very sophisticated on the shelf in a great room or in an avid collector’s library.
