Description:
The Holy Bible - Containing The Old and New Testaments: translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised with marginal readings, references and chronological dates. New York - Published by Thomas Mason & George Lane, for the Methodist Episcopal Church at the conference office 200 Mulberry Street – James Colcord, Printer. 1839. This is a fabulous 19th century full calf leather folio presentation bible. It measures 11 5/8” x 9 ¾” x 3”. There is such a wealth of information within this book – not only does it have the old and new testaments but there are charts and genealogy chronicles. There are numerous steel plate illustrations throughout! The detail is astounding - from what I can see the majority of the illustrations look to be by Wm. D. Smith. They each have a tissue guard and there is also a frontispiece. As would be expected, due to the age of this book, there is quite a bit of wear. The leather cover is quite scuffed and the spine head is especially frayed. The spine has compartmental raised bands that are gilt ruled with a contrasting dark maroon label which has a gilt border and lettering. The binding is good – though slightly loose at the front hinge. The pages all have quite a bit of foxing – but the words are still clear and crisp. There is some shadowing of illustrations onto tissue guards along with foxing. There is also a POS and date on the ffep and rfep which reads Joshua Brooks – 1832 Portsmouth, NH. Overall this is a nice and rare early 19th century full leather family/presentation bible. There is also a fabulously interesting part about this bible, above and beyond what I have already mentioned - the Family Record pages! There are 4 pages: one is for marriages; two are for births; and one is for deaths. They actually tell quite a story. This is what I was able to learn from those pages: Joshua Brooks (the previous owner of this bible), married Ruth Dearborn in 1839. They went on to have three children – Ana, Mary and Ruth. In 1852 Joshua’s wife Ruth died at the age of 37. Joshua then remarried in 1853 to Eliza Lane. Unfortunately another unexpected death occurred again for Joshua his daughter Mary who died in 1862 at the age of 18.
