Description:
Authentic Antique 19th century Armenian gilt copper and champleve (Cloisonné) enamel Icon, most likely representing one of the Evangelists. Details: The Icon is made of a rectangular gilded copper plate and finely decorated with multi color enamel (each of the colors of enamel had to be fired at different temperatures), depicting most likely one of the Evangelists seated on an eastern style chair with cushions, with his left hand holding a book of Gospel and in his right hand holding a writing pen, there are also some writing instruments on the rectangular table in front of him, his feet are resting on a large red cushion with an Armenian inscription on the blue panel beside. In front of him is on open book also with Armenian writing which is resting on the tail of a fish. Above the head of the saint emerges a hand from heaven blessing his work. The icon is mounted in a tiny copper frame with a wooden panel behind the frame, there are signs of small dents and old repair, the soldering on the corner is open which indicates that at some point the copper frame was opened most likely to replace the old supporting wood board backing, which probably disintegrated, with fresh wood which was then covered by paper with a wood pattern design. Over time we have had many orthodox icons but never anything as this particular icon, so we consider this icon to be very rare. MEASUREMENTS: 32 cm (12 5/ 8 in) by 25.7 cm (10 1/8 in).
