Description: This auction is for a set of four antique Stickley-inspired chairs that are unique, one-of-a-kind, custom-made, and hand-carved from the Arts & Crafts era. They are in quite good condition, with only a few areas of concern that I will point out. On the whole, however, these chairs are in far better condition than one might expect for chairs of this vintage that have clearly been lovingly cared for by their owners. The standard caveat for antique, vintage, and pre-owned furniture, that some signs of wear and/or use are to be expected, applies to these chairs, but only very slightly so.

To answer a question that I've been asked about the origins of these chairs: No, they are not "branded" or labeled "Stickley," but it is my understanding that early Stickley pieces did not have any identifying marks. I think it may be that these could have been either early unmarked, custom made by a Stickley apprentice for someone who wanted a wood other than oak and who loved what I believe to be lotus flower and so had a stylized lotus carved on each of the chairs.

The chairs are all identical, with only the smallest variations in the carving of the medallion that is centered on each upper backrest. There are so many different and distinctive aspects to the design and make-up of this chair that it's almost better to just let the photos do the talking. I've seen many chairs that are similar in their basic design but none that have so many labor-intensive, tasteful, custom touches that are eye-pleasing and elegant, but not overdone in the least. I don't have any concrete history for them but I can tell you that they are special enough that they were definitely created by a master woodsmith, who lovingly created these pieces.

The seats lift out of their frames and are covered in what looks to be one of the earliest versions of imitation leather, in a very dark brown. If you look at the chair on the far right of the photos, you can see that the near corner seat is lifted up just enough to show the space between the seat and its housing. There are a few very small slits in the fabric on some of the chair seats, but I think these might be easy to repair if the new owner wants to keep everything original, as these seats appear to be. The wood is a rich but light honey-color, exact type unknown. To put it mildly, these are a one-of-a-kind treasure for the arts and crafts era collector. Don't let them get away!

If you have any questions or would like to see many more photos for closer inspection, please let me know and I'll send them right off to you. There are so many beautiful details that I couldn't include on the auction page!

As to shipping arrangements, once I know where the chairs are to be shipped, I will provide the buyer with two or more quotes from my local contacts here, so you will have more than just one choice for shipper. From past experience in shipping similar chairs, I should be able to find a shipper (UPS ground or FedEx ground) for all four chairs in the range of $200 and will absorb any amount over that (to destinations within the continental US). If you have access to a less-expensive means of shipping, I will certainly defer to your own choice of shipper, will work with you to coordinate packing and pickup, and will assist as much as I am reasonably able to do so. Shipping rates vary from one area to another, with the most expensive rates being those of the west coast of the continental USA, in my experience. There will be a charge for both materials and labor, over and above the basic shipper's charge. Please email me with any questions or concerns at all. Thanks!
