Description:
Ammonites are extinct members of the Cephalopod class. Modern members include nautilus, squid and octopus. They first appeared during the Silurian Period (435 million to 410 million years ago) and were abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic Cretaceous periods (175 million to 65 million years ago). Ammonites are important index fossils - that is, they often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. T are several hundred species of ammonites that can be found arounf the world. These amazing prehistoric sea creatures grew to be as much as 6 feet in diameter. They expanded shell by adding larger chambers in a circular motion. Most of our ammonites are found in Sahara desert in Morocco. They date back to the Devonian period, when Sahara desert was covered by vast ocean. Through the conjuncture of receding waters, & natural disasters, this prehistoric ocean became what is now known as Sahara desert, which is one of the richest formations for all sorts of amazing fossils. A wonderful conversation piece, besides it's decor and history. A great size. A WONDERFUL GIFT.
