Table of Contents

The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines all have groups dedicated to Special Operations. Such specialized military teams are particularly instrumental as the United States engages in a war on terrorism, fighting an elusive and scattered foe. Generally, U.S. Special Operations Forces share common goals, such as penetrating enemy lines, gathering vital intelligence, attacking enemy military bases and airfields, and rescuing soldiers and hostages. The Special Ops Forces are called upon when diplomacy fails and political and military considerations do not allow for the deployment of a larger conventional force.

We will never hear or read about many of the details surrounding the actions and contributions of America's Special Operations Forces. This same necessity for secrecy means that a special operator lost in the line of duty will go largely unpublicized. The people within this community are true examples of ""unsung heroes.""

A Pulitzer Prizewinning photographer and current staff photographer for Vice-President Dick Cheney, David Bohrer details the rigorous training, complex missions, and state-of-the-art equipment that comprise the American special operator experience. More than 200 photographs complement Bohrer's well-researched text, as you are taken into the fold of the Navy SEALs, the Army Special Forces, Army Rangers, USAF Special Ops, and Marine Force Recon. With unprecedented access, author David Bohrer accompanied commandos on patrol in the jungles of Panama, on assault craft on the Pacific Ocean, and in aircraft over the Gulf of Mexico, while photographing and interviewing teams who momentarily let their guard down and allowed America's Special Forces a rare look into their world.
