Description: 1820's 1830's American Tucker or Old Paris porcelain trumpet vase hand painted with gold gilt Neoclassical scrolls and blue decoration. Condition: 2" Hairline crack running down the rim and drilled hole at bottom. Wear to gold gilt. In 1826 William Ellis Tucker founded the Tucker Porcelain Manufactory to great fanfare at the site of the old Philadelphia waterworks. He had found porcelain ingredients at sites near Wilmington, Del., and in New Jersey. At first, transfer-printed landscapes and floral patterns were executed on porcelain; from about 1831 ornate pieces, such as vases decorated with overglaze painting in the style of Sèvres porcelain, were produced; cups decorated with the heads of U.S. presidents date from about 1836. Although the factory produced a variety of wares including tea and dinner services,Most of what the factory offered was designed to imitate and compete with French porcelain of the time. It remained in operation for a period of twelve years, finally closing in 1838. There are numerous anecdotal accounts from the period, praising the porcelain for its quality even when compared to fine French Old Paris porcelain wares. The factory won numerous awards including several times from the Franklin institute for 'best American porcelain'. It remains very popular today among collectors of early American pottery and porcelain.
