Alphabetically Arranged. With an Appendix, giving pedigress of all the native stallions whose dams have no names, with full and copious index to produce of the mares. By S. D. Bruce. L. C. Bruce, Co-Editor. New York: Sanders D. Bruce, 1873 - 1898 (volumes I - V). New York: The Jockey Club, 1989 (volumes VI & VII). All First Editions. 8vo., contemporary 3/4 leather binding over marbled boards, spines in 6 raised band compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, attractive, with professional repairs, including rebacking, minor rubs, bound tightly, Union League of Philadelphia bookplates on front fixed endpapers, some front hinges with endpaper separation, title pages with Union League embossing, gilt top edges a little tarnished, with volume VII having a stain on the top. A very nice set of RARE books considered the Holy Grail of American Thoroughbred racing. The first volume of The American Stud Book was published in 1873, by Col. Sanders D. Bruce, a Kentuckian who spent almost a lifetime researching the pedigrees of American Thoroughbreds. Bruce closely followed the pattern of the first Stud Book, producing additional volumes of the register until 1896, at which time the project was taken over by The Jockey Club. The integrity of The American Stud Book is the foundation on which all Thoroughbred racing in North America depends.
