Description: This is a superb museum-quality hand-made coin silver tureen, magnificently decorated with truly exceptional figural Rocky Mountain elk by the highly esteemed silversmiths at Wood & Hughes of New York. It rises from an oval base which has been handsomely accented all around with a combination of scrolling leafy foliage and beadwork, all topped by a border of gadroon work. This gadroon work has been repeated at the upper level of the base and also around the upper border of the tureen to great stylistic effect. The main decoration, however, is provided by the extraordinarily realistic figures of the elk heads which also serve as carrying handles. These have been meticulously crafted to the very highest standards and show the heads and shoulders of the deer artfully surrounded by branches with leafy foliage, all of the very highest quality. The heads have both been crowned by splendid sets of beautifully detailed multi-branched antlers. The faces of the deer have been particularly well executed, their large wide-open eyes and open mouths giving them each a most endearing and engaging expression. Their necks are covered with luxuriously curling hair, all intricately detailed and showing superb craftsmanship and mastery of technique. The tureen's lid has been crowned with a fabulous finial depicting a standing elk, his head proudly raised to show off his wonderful antlers. He stands upon a raised oval surface of beautifully stippled silver showing immaculately detailed flora and fauna, all expertly crafted and surrounded by beadwork. The quality of the workmanship is exemplary throughout and the tureen and the cover are both in excellent condition with a lovely soft patina and exquisite detailing and definition on all the decorative figural elements. The underside of the base clearly shows the marks of hand-hammering and has been stamped with the words Wood & Hughes. This is a very special piece and is a wonderful example of the very finest quality hand-made silver; it would appeal to any connoisseur of the very best 19th century American silver. It weighs a substantial 84 troy ounces and measures approx. 17" x approx. 9 " x approx. 12 " tall to the top of the finial.
