Description:
Antique tile, This is a superb Grueby Faience decorative insert tile. Grueby Faience Company was started about 1894 and incorporated in 1897, in Boston, Massachusetts, it went until 1909. Grueby Faience and Tile Co. went from 1909-1920. This tile is the design of Addison B. Le Boutillier. He accepted a part time position with Grueby in 1903 and was the Director of Design. He continued to work for Grueby until about 1911. He had designed 100's of tile designs for the company. This particular tile was a floor insert. It is pictured in the 1909 Grueby Faience Company Catalogue. It is molded in low relief with only the low parts glazed in their wonderful mustard yellow glaze. It shows a Winged Cupid with a cornucopia, design number 665. This design number is pressed right into the edge of the tile. As with most of these tiles this was the only mark on the tile. It is done on their heavy deep red clay. The tile measures 6" and is ¾" thick. It is in good condition never having been installed, there are a couple of minor chips on edges which do not show much as they blend into the clay color, basically the two top corners. The glaze is quite wonderful. I have a few of these so the picture may not be the exact tile. I can always send you an image of tile that is available.
