Description: An extraordinary piece of sporting jewelry—a brooch featuring an enameled fox’s head superimposed over various implements of the hunt. The brooch itself is in the shape of a horseshoe, each hole set with an old mine-cut diamond. A riding crop and a whip are superimposed over the horseshoe. The crowning touch, however, is the fabulous fox’s head completely covered in some of the best Newark enameling we’ve seen. The lifelike colors and are just stunning. The eyes are set with small rubies which contribute to the ferocious look established by the jagged gold teeth. Exposed areas of gold have a slight matte bloom more typically seen in French Art Nouveau jewels. This brooch is prominently pictured in “Masterpieces of American Jewelry”, which was published to accompany the 2005 exibition of American jewels at New York’s Museum of American Folk Art. The brooch is unsigned, but is definitely by Alling Bros. Origin: America, ca. 1910. Condition: excellent, all original, no enamel damage. Size: 15/16” x 1-5/16”. Weight: 6.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .1 carat; ruby, .05 carat.
