Description: Alice Schille Watercolor 19 1/2" X 24 1/2" GUATEMALAN MOTHER & CHILD Hello, Here is an important watercolor by Alice Schille. This piece can be found in in the catalogue of the Alice Schille Memorial held in Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in 1964. We have the catalogue that came with the painting [please see images below.] This painting is listed as painting # 100 under the title of “Guatemala Study” 24 ½” X 19 ½” and a black and white photo of it, is also featured in the catalogue [please see images below]. The painting is still housed in the same package as it was exhibited in this gallery and bears the Columbus Gallery of Fine art label on the verso. A most beautiful water color painting by the renowned artist. It came out of an estate in Montecito, California—most likely a prominent family from Columbus, Ohio. They had given it to a charity organization for sale and partial donation. The painting, we believe, is a smaller and prior piece to the painting called "Guatemala 1939" that appears on the cover of the abovementioned catalogue and is also shown in William H. Gerdts book with the size 37 1/2” X 30” oil on page 141. Gredts assigns the date 1935 for this painting, but this date is not congruent with the catalogue's published date for the same work. It is also possible that Schille first painted the oil in 1935 [according to Gerdts] and then this water color in 1938 [according to the catalogue]. This is quite plausible since water color is a more difficult medium than oil and of course Schille was a total master at water color, so she saved the more mature work for later. At any rate, this evolved maturity and her absolute mastery are evident in the water color displaying a very complex face of the mother in comparison to the oil. What do you think? This painting is depicting a Guatemalan mother and child ca.1930s and was done in her "modern realism" style. Image is signed LR and is in perfect condition, with NO problems of any kind. We have kept it in as found condition and in the dark for the last few years. The colors are very fresh looking and unfaded. It is in original frame & under glass. Alice Schille was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1869. Her father was a successful soft drink manufacturer and, when he died when Alice was seventeen, her mother took over the business and preserved their means of living. Schille showed a talent for painting at a young age and began her training at the Columbus Art School and continued at the Art Students League in New York where she studied under William Merritt Chase. Alice's independent spirit and commitment to her work made her an outstanding student and earned her special recognition by Chase himself. In 1894 Schille made her first trip to Europe, remaining there until 1900. Her travels and experiences with the other artists there affected her deeply. Although accomplished in both watercolor and oil, Schille preferred the ease and fluidity of watercolors while traveling and saved oil for formal portraits completed in the studio. She returned to teach at the Columbus School of Art in 1900, but still returned to Europe in the summers. After the outbreak of war in 1914, Schille traveled extensively in the United States and Mexico, and would later travel to Africa and the Middle East as well. All of these regions are reflected in her art, and she seemed especially inspired by the bright landscapes of New Mexico and North Africa. Alice Schille died in 1955 at age 86. Her work remained consistently simple and direct, relying on the bright colors and expressive forms so prevalent in her paintings.
