Agnes Richmond Gloucester MA Woman Artist Original O/C
Description: Oil on canvas, unstretched and unframed. Unsigned. Estate stamped canvas verso: "A M Richmond". Painting circa 1935. Dimensions: Image: 17 x 19 3/4in. Canvas: 19 x 22in. Weight: 1lb. Condition: Surface of the work is slightly dirty. A number of nicks and minor areas of loss to surface paint scattered throughout. Painting could benefit from minor restoration. A 9in. long horizontal soft crease through surface paint located 1 3/4in. from lower edge and beginning 4in. from right side. Numerous nail-holes along canvas margin edges from prior stretching. Losses to edges do not affect central image. Otherwise, very good condition overall with no evidence of inpainting when examined under u.c. light. Artist's Biography:
Acquired directly from the estate of Agnes Richmond (1870-1964), American. Previously undervalued and overlooked, American women artists such as Agnes M. Richmond are receiving renewed interest in the art market. Richmond is particularly noteworthy, because of her impressionist style portraits of American women and children. Agnes Richmond was born in Alton, Ilinois and studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. She went on to study in New York at the Arts Students League with Twachtman, Appleton, Clark and Kenyon Cox and instructed there from 1910-1914. With her husband Winthrop Turney, Agnes Richmond was a member of the original Woodstock colony, and spent summers painting in Gloucester, Mass from 1915-1956 and Mountainville, N.Y. from 1932-1940.
