Description:
In 1848, Henri-Victor Delespaul and his wife Emily Havez founded a candy-making company in Lille, France which produced coated and chocolate candy. Because they didn't have children or other heirs, the company was sold in 1893 to Hector Franchomme who continued in the confection business and later sold to other companies including the U.S. firm General Foods Corporation. This nice clock is another from the collection of advertising gallery clocks which I have been privileged to purchase over the years. The paper dial retains all of its advertising descriptive wording: DELESPAUL-HAVEZ CHOCOLAT AU LAIT [meaning: milk chocolate]- (see close-up photograph) and the eight-day movement (which bears the mark letter "A") is running stoutly. The dial is held in place with ten small screws !!! the holes for which which appear to be original to the clock. A trap door on the bottom of the case (see photograph) opens to permit access to the pendulum 'bob' for adjusting the timing (speed) of the mechanism (see photograph). This is a really neat old advertising clock that will add lots of 'sweet' charm to any chocolate lovers kitchen or den.
