4pp. ALS from Edmund K. Brown of the 6th New Hampshire Infantry, Company D. Written in ink and datelined ""Alexandria Va, May 31st 1865."" Brown writes while garrisoned at Alexandria, waiting to be mustered out after two years of service: "".I have just received your very kind letter.I have to go of by myself and read them and when Charley told me that he had meat and brown bread for diner Sunday, I could not help weeping like a child to think how well I have always provided for my family and then to think of my own fair, it is enough to make all heaven weep.I suppose Mrs. Quarles thinks Sam will not get drowsy, but Abby let me tell you that she is grandly mistaken, for the day that we went for Mount Vernon, he got so beastly drowsy that he had to ride in the ambulance home, then soon as we passed review in Washington he went off and got drunk.This morning I woke at 4 o'clock went to the brook to have a wash and very unexpectedly I find that we are going to have one more hot day. Yesterday and last night there was quite a number of Regiments left fer there house in New York and Pen, they give many a hearty cheer on starting and the band played there tune when they come marching home."" The 6th New Hampshire was engaged at Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg and assisted General Grant in the Siege of Vicksburg. Edmund Brown mustered into service on 16 December 1863 and died of disease at Alexandria on 10 July 1865. Letter measures 5"" x 8"". Some foxing, otherwise in fine condition.
