Description:
On offer is an outstanding portrait of a great beauty & her little daughter. They are looking directly at us thereby engaging us, unlike so many early photographs where the sitters have the "deer in the headlight stare" due to the long exposures then necessary. In addition to the moody ambiance the fashionable & unusual hairstyle must be pointed out. Rather than parting the hair in the middle, drawing it down & puffing it out at the sides before pulling it to the back as was the style then, this gorgeous young woman swept both sides up & away from the face in French rolls. Also unusual is the "summer whites" both sitters are wearing. I can't remember the last time I saw a lady from that era dressed in all white other than a wedding dress. Creating depth and definition within all that whiteness was a challenge this photographer met. The cheeks & lips are softly tinted. Finally...the image has the original seals which are 100% intact. All specks are under the glass, none on the dag itself as we can see by the reflection each of them casts. This dag is in pristine condition. Should it be desired to replace the glass it would absolutely sparkle. Housed in full original gold tooled leather case with an expertly replaced hinge. Both clasps are present. A 6th plate measures 3.25" x 2.75" without the case.
