This striking pendant is marked “14K” indicating gold. It is in very good condition. It weighs approximately 28.2 grams. What a delightful and fun pendant, and all the more so if you like unique jewelry or are interested in Buddha. What a charming cultural item to frame or hang up in a secret spot to bless all those in your home.
The disc is Nepherite Jade. Nephrite jade is an ornamental stone, used in carvings, beads, or cabochon cut gemstones. The name nephrite is derived from lapis nephriticus, which means “kidney stone.” [2] Accordingly, nephrite jade was once believed to be a cure for kidney stones.
The gold on this piece is 14K yellow gold, and above the Buddha’s head is, first a crown/halo, and second, the Chinese word Budai. The large right ear lobe represents abundant happiness. The Buddha’s face is made of pink coral for a striking counterbalance to the jade. It is hand carved and is considered a wonderful thing to own.
The celestial Buddha named Hotei or Pu-Tai is best known as the jolly Laughing Buddha. In China, he is known as the Loving or Friendly One. He is based on an eccentric Chinese Ch'an (Zen) monk who lived over 1,000 years ago and has become a significant part of Buddhist and Shinto culture. Because of this monk's benevolent nature, he came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva who will be Maitreya (the Future Buddha). His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation "Laughing Buddha."
He is the patron of the weak, the poor, and children. In icons of Buddha showing his large pot belly, the protruding stomach symbolizes happiness, good luck, and plenitude.
