Description:
The July, 1950 Holiday Magazine is in very good condition with only slight yellowing and a bit of wear and tear on the edges. the pictures and text are all fine. The article on the Connecticut Valley has subdivisions. First there is Hartford, the Yankee Capital ,exemplifies New England virtues but more importantly in this piece: INSURANCE CO. CULTURE! The insurance empire is also the site of Trinity College(1823) the first college in the U.S. that forbids religious discrimination in its charter. The diversity of its population doesn't exactly fit the term Yankee which the author says is native-born white Protestant. This later group is moving out toward the suburbs. Above all it is the insurance business and its history since its beginnings in fire recovery funds. Aetna was founded in 1819. The story of Eliphalet Terry, 2nd president of Hartford Fire kept his promise and covered the the $64,000+ expenses of a 1835 fire in NY. Then follows the story of Chicago and SanFransisco calamities. Benjaming Noyes,Morgan Gardner Bulkeley(who also was a political figure), the Colt revolver, and scenes from the life of white-collar insurance girls complete the story of Hartford. The Connecticut Valley section is about the river, (discovered in 1614 by the Dutch,Adriaen Block,) the homes and business on the river, colleges, old Yankee families,Puritans, Pilgrims, the Mathers, and the non-Yankee new immigrant families. With industrialization, the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants are out-numbered by Catholics, although the towns still retain their Yankee flavor. Connecticut artists and writers, many in the Old Lyme art colony, are mentioned. Famous Conn.personalities are mentioned like Nathan Hale,Katherine Hepburn, etc.
The Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota has a hoard of iron ore and the Great North Woods nearby. It is reported here that it the Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine is the largest man-made hole on earth.. This is also an article about Duluth, Hibbing, the mining companies, the supply and demand of ore,Arrowhead recreation area, and a squeeze- box wedding(showing typical recreation of people in the area). the article on Seattle is almost all photos with seamen, the harbor, fish,& shipbuilding.
