4pp. letter from Charles S. Ramsay of the 44th Ohio Infantry Band. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ""Camp Piatt Oct 19th 1861,"" letter reads in part: "".We arrived at the landing on Thursday evening.It was rainy and everything looked gloomy and dreary enough.This camp is situated about one hundred and fifty yards from the bank of the Kanawa River.they apparently tried to find the worst place for a camp along the whole range of mountains and they succeeded admirably. We recd our horns and uniforms yesterday.while we were waiting for our things to come up from the boat, Alex Sykes and I went up the mountain to the top. I tell you it was a magnificent view. we found some chestnuts but had considerable difficulty in securing them.Coming up the river we saw several places of note. the battle ground of Scarey Creek, Gov. Wise camp from which he was driven by Cox. a steamer or the ruins of a steamer belong to the Rebels which our men fored hot shot into and burned. Gov. Wise also encamped a short distance above us. The 37th Regiment have a colonel that they captured the day before we landed. the scouts bring in Prisoners every day. Two companies from our regiment are out scouting today."" The 44th Ohio Infantry saw its most significant action in the rout of Confederate forces at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Charles S. Ramsay mustered into service on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 October 1862 at Covington, Kentucky. Letter measures 5"" x 8"". Mild foxing and toning, otherwise near fine condition.
