Description:
Here for your consideration is a beautifully hand colored stipple engraving by the famous engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. This is from his series "The Months of the Year". I haven't been able to find a completion date for this particular series but it was likely completed in the 1780's. Here is a short biography of Francesco Bartolozzi: Francesco Bartolozzi From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francesco Bartolozzi ), Italian engraver, was born at Florence.
He was originally destined to follow the profession of his father, a gold- and silver-smith, but he manifested so much skill and taste in designing that he was placed under the superintendence of two Florentine artists, including Ignazio Hugford and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti who instructed him in painting. After devoting three years to that art, he went to Venice and studied engraving. He particularly admired the work of Joseph Wanger[1]. His work in Venice began to draw attention. He then removed for a short time to Rome, where he completed a set of engravings representing events from the life of St Nilus, and, after returning to Venice, set out for London in 1764.
For nearly forty years he resided in London, and produced an enormous number of engravings, the best being those of Clytie, after Annibale Caracci, and of the Virgin and Child, after Carlo Dolci. A great proportion of them are from the works of Cipriani and Angelica Kauffmann. Bartolozzi also contributed a number of plates to Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. He also drew sketches of his own in red chalk. He was elected a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768.
Bartolozzi achieved a technological breakthrough by inventing a new stipple technique of colored engraving, in which he successfully reproduced the famous colored portrait drawings of Holbein from the Royal collection in 1793.
In 1802 he was invited to Lisbon as director of the National Academy. He remained in Portugal till his death. His son Gaetano Stephano Bartolozzi ), also an engraver, was the father of Madame Vestris.
Ticozzi publishes a list of his output.
He is quite famous for his stipple engraving technique and one of his students became famous as well, Pierre Joseph Redoute is known for his famous and much sought after "Roses" series. He is, in fact, the only engraver ever elected to the Royal Academy in its history.
The engraving itself is in great condition, no stains, tears, foxing etc. The frame has a few minor problems, a few spots of red paint and small holes, easily touched up with some gold paint. The frame measure approximately 22" by 18" by 2" and is framed, double matted, and behind glass. The framing and matting was done by a professional. The engraving measure approximately 14"by 11" and has beautiful hand coloring.Simply a nice piece done by an engraving master.
