Description:
4pp. letter from Charles W. Gooch of the 27th Maine Infantry, Company I. Written in ink and datelined ""Camp at Chantilly April 1 1863,"" letter reads in part: "".We have not seen any Rebs yet.and the sound that one Rebel was coming as prisoner or any other way would go though the camp as quick as thought. There is a good deal of talk here that we shall go back to Washington as I told you about in my last. The talk is that Gen. Casey has been ordered back from Centreville to the defences of Washington and if he is I should think it likely that we and the 25th would go back with him too as we are in his division. One man said that the Colonel told him that he expected orders to go back to Washington everyday.I do think that the Col. knows much more about where we are going than I do."" Charles Gooch mustered into Company I on 30 September 1862 and mustered out on 17 July 1863 at Portland, Maine. The 27th Maine stood firm during Lee's second invasion of the North which won the Medal of Honor for all 864 men in the regiment. Letter measures 7.25"" x 9.25"". Some creasing and foxing, otherwise near fine condition.
