4pp. letter from Charles W. Gooch of the 27th Maine Infantry, Company I. Written in ink and datelined ""Monday / Camp near Chantilly Mar 30 1863,"" letter reads in part: "".We are situated on a small hill right in the woods which is what we call Norway pine. We and the 25th Maine are all together.We are squat down here to prevent guerilla raids so it is said.I understand we are about eight miles from Centerville where Casey is with the rest of his force. Whether we shall advance or go back to Washington I do not know. There is a good many stories going here that we shall go back to Washington soon. You will be likely to here a good many stories about things here and a good many that is not true for everyone has a story of his own to tell.We are in Sylbie tents now but are rather crowded and some of us are going to fix up our small tents for I like plenty of room you know."" Charles Gooch mustered into Company I on 30 September 1862 and mustered out on 17 July 1863 at Portland, Maine. The 27th Maine stood firm during Lee's second invasion of the North which won the Medal of Honor for all 864 men in the regiment. Letter measures 5"" x 8"". Mild foxing, otherwise near fine condition.
