8pp. letter from James Scott of the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry, Company B. Written in ink and datelined ""Camp near Memphis, Nov. 30th, 1862,"" letter reads in part: "".Negroes are mostly all run off into the interior.for fear of having them confiscated or to set them to work in the army.the slaves are all moved back from the river and in Ky. all that could be spared were sent down South. We have fresh bread since we come here. I like it a good deal better than I do the crackers for my teeth is hardly fit for the task.news is now that Holly Springs is taken by the Federals with 120 prisoners.We have just received orders to move about two miles down on the right of the Brigade.Monday morning, Dec. 1.The health of the Reg. is generally very good.camp life agrees with us all. Frank fatted up.gained over 20 pounds.Our Capt. is not very well now.He has had the chronic diarrahea and can't get it stopped. I don't think he will stand marching.We started this morning at 8 o'clock.They had to take us all through the city to show us to the secesh.We passed some very strong fortifications as we came here with some fine looking barkers mounted.enclosed you will find a sprig of holly a very common bush in this country and I guess Mother has seen it in the old days."" Scott mustered into service on 11 August 1862 and was discharged for disability on 3 April 1863. In December 1862, the regiment joined Sherman in the failed assault on Chickasaw Bluffs; before Scott mustered out, it also participated in the capture of Fort Hindman at Arkansas Post. Letter measures 5"" x 8"". Original sprig of holly is preserved in plastic case and included in this lot. Letter shows mild waterstaining to edges, though text remains bold. Excellent condition.
