Sotheby's, London, of the collection of M Arnaud de Vitry dealing with geometry and perspective, was remarkable for its breadth and wealth of materials within an extremely specialized subject (but one which affects us all - that of how we see and how we represent what we see on paper). 'Geometry and Space' may not be a title to set the press aflame, but in fact it was a fairly accurate description of what was in the sale - an amazing array of editions of Euclid and other texts of geometrical interest allied to an impressive group of major and minor texts on perspective. The catalogue was well-organized and laid out, even if some readers did balk at the apparently neverending stream of Euclid, and generally accurate information was given. The highest price paid in the sale was £190,000 for lot 666, the Third Edition of Pelerin's De artificiali perspectiva (Toul: P. Jacobi, 1521), a wonderfully illustrated book of quite astonishing modernity, in a contemporary binding. This was just at the estimate. The extraordinary plates of Stoer's Geometria et Perspectiva (Augsburg: M Manger, 1567) sold for £60,000 (lot 782), or double the estimate, as did lot 469 Jamnitzer's Perspectiva corporum regularium (Nuremberg, 1568) which sold for £72,000. Pacioli's Somma of 1494 (lot 644) sold for £135,000, his Divina proportione of 1509 (lot 643) selling for £80,000. Lot 476 containing three works bound together all printed in Paris between 1496 and 1503, sold for £31,000. Total Gross was over $3 Million Dollars In many ways this was a beacon sale: a highly specialized collection bought over many years from the book trade and offered at auction properly catalogued (no book was left undescribed) and presented, which, one hopes, satisfied the collector who saw his own labours and skill properly acknowledged. By and large the sale was a financial success, not hugely successful (ie no gross distortions of price) but one which both reflects not only how the market can be formed, but shows also what it will bear. The proper symbiosis of these various aspects of the market, and not enormous but short-lived explosions of sale-room fever, is what keeps the market, for both auction houses and booksellers, flourishing.
