Description: From our collection of over 150 antique fireplace mantels: To an important American folk art mantelpiece. The mantel has been removed from a tavern in Unionville, Pennsylvania. The form of the mantel is neoclassic and similar to the examples found in Philadelphia. The mantel could have been brought to the site from Philadelphia. The mantel was hand carved in folk motives which was probably done at the site by a local carver. The three tablets are carved with stylized urns. The central one with two handles. Between the tablets is a wave with circles, above and below are two band courses carved with neoclassic devices. The mantel retains the original shelf, moulded pilasters and projected plinths. All in all this is a rare survival and an excellent example of American folk carving. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
