Description:
Here for your consideration is a fine lithograph of flowers by Jane Loudon. This particular example was published in "The Ladies Flower Garden" which came out in four volumes from the period of approximately 1841 - 1849. This lithograph came from the first volume in 1841. Jane Loudon herself lead an interesting life. She was a successful author, publishing a book called "The Mummy" which led to her meeting her husband John Loudon. She actually knew little about plants or gardening but would read books and her husband was an avid gardener who taught her much also. Her husband pushed her to help him publish a book about gardening and flowering plants which became what you see here. "The Ladies Flower Garden". However the work was hard and expensive to make. While the series sold very well, in excess of 20,000 copies sold, they never were able to recoup their investment. And on top of that her husbands health fails not long after these volumes are published, dying in 1851. After his death she tried, with various success, at writing again. She had a daughter named Agnes to support also so financially she had a hard life until the end. She died herself in 1858, with little money. Though her daughter Agnes would go on to write some books and short stories she never had the success her mother had. Despite her hard life her lithographs are known for their beautiful color and attention to detail. So I think you will like these items and be impressed with their skill. This particular lithograph is of five different types of dahlias, showing a full spectrum of color from blue to red. As I said earlier the quality is first-rate. The lithograph is in excellent condition, no issues such as tears, staining, foxing, etc. It is matted on a black background in a maple veneer frame behind glass which makes for a really good artistic contrast. The frame itself is losing the veneer though it may be repairable. Size of frame is approximately 15" by 12" while the lithograph itself measures 8" by 10". If you have any questions feel free to ask and thank you for looking!
