Description:
One of TWO! we have the matching pair and they are just gorgeous! A Monumental and breathtaking 19th century Italian hand painted Majolica figural grotesque urn. The two sides of the urn are hand painted with different landscape scenes. The two scenes are all detailed paintings depicting typical country village life-style. The figural, scrolled handles are large winged semi-nude, grotesque sea creatures which rest on the body of the urns. All on a pale yellow and mustard ground with floral motifs and winged putti's, entirely hand painted. The rims have figural mythological masks. Signed to the underside with the crown and "M" for Majolica. Condition: Excellent condition; small areas on the base with tiny loss, very normal for these early ones. The hand painted scenes are all in fine condition, no loss. We have the matching urn which makes an impressive pair so please be sure to visit.
