Description:
This basket along with two others that I obtained originated from Pennsylvania. In the 18th and 19th centuries primarily German households used these baskets to make bread in. Rye baskets were also used to place foods into and then covered. Mice will not eat into the rye bowls (as some other's are vulnerable), and this sweet grass was preffered over others for just this reason. This particular bowl is in good and sound shape. Condition: The bowl appears to have had dough in it at one point (don't know how long ago), and there are very fine dried flour areas throughout the bowls inner surface. On the top roll (rim) there is an area where the rye contents in the top roll have been torn. However it is not bad, as you can see on the picture. I have discounted this bowl due to this very reason. Rye bowls from this era are appraised upwards to near $2000.00- So if your looking for a piece of "Americana" and would like to show this bowl on your counter with the backside to the wall; you could place a cotton cloth in the bottom and stack any sort of item to match your decor.
