Description:
Here is an absolutely magnificent 19th century sculpture of a Stag standing below palm trees on a rocky ground. This sculpture is made of spelter with incredible detail. Each leaf of the palm tree is distinct and all the palm skins of the trunk are highly detailed as well as the rocky ground that this stag or deer is standing on. This lamp actually looks silver plated that is basically what spelter is it is a base metal that can be highly polished to imitate silver. This sculpture was originally a lamp - in the middle of the palm tree trunks there is a group of four palm leaves where four branches would have been extended out and down to hold either a decorative colored bulb or art glass lamp shades. At the base of the palm tree trunk there is a hole where the wire would come out. I have seen pictures of this before to show what they looked like and it is a very simple job to return it to a lamp. However I like it best just the way it is. It is a very unique sculpture and would go comfortable with a multitude of different styles especially the Craftsmen era, art glass era or Art Nouveau. It is in excellent condition missing only one palm leaf on the top which is hard to see unless you are going over it with a fine tooth comb but never the less a great sculpture for anyone interested in animal subjects. It measures 22 5/8 h with a base diameter of 9 ½.
