Description:
This is a fantastic 19th Century hand carved Jesus crucifix on wood cross. Really a brilliantly carved piece by a master craftsman. The Corpus is carved from probably Ash wood, It stands at 34 inches tall (just under 3 feet tall). The corpus is 15 inches in length. This came from St. Johns Seminary in Waterford Ireland and I presume was made in Ireland as there is a fine tradition in the South East of Ireland for wood carving with a couple of famous families like the Fitzgeralds in South Kilkenny who still carve items on commission. In great condition from about 1850. You can still see the joints where the arms join the main body of Christ. Corpus's were always carved in 3 pieces. 2 arms and then the main body. I should think it has been repainted a couple of times in it's life, you can see a lighter shade of flesh pink around the hair line on the forehead of Christ. Really this is a beautiful item I will be sad to part with and I want it to go to a good home or to a collector
