Description:
Here is a wonderful Bing & Grondahl Christmas Collector plate from 1976 entitled "Christmas Welcome".
Bing & Grondahl plates have been collectibles since the late 1800's and continue to current times. Each plate is made in Denmark out of fine porcelain. After Christmas of the year made, the company destroys all molds to prevent any possible future reproduction. Each piece is signed with either the artists name or initial.
The history of the Christmas Plates: Many years ago, wealthy people in Europe gave their servants plates and platters w/ cookies, candies and other goodies. The servants cherished these plates as they had not much in the way of decorative and extravagant extras. So they began saving the plates and hanging them on their walls. They referred to them as their "Christmas Plates". As the servants began sharing and showing off their collections, the employers began giving more attention to the plates given. Additionally, the eventually began adding dates.
1976 - Christmas Welcome by Henry Thelander depicts (according to Pat Owen, "The Story of Bing & Grondahl Christmas Plates") " a little girl who shouts with glee as she runs to greet her father, a Danish fisherman, on Christmas Eve. In Denmark, Christmas is the biggest celebration of the year. The scene also depicts a typical Danish fishing village near Copenhagen complete with its very old church built 800 years ago in the Gothic style."
This plate is in EXCELLENT condition with no chips, cracks or breaks. It does not come with its original box. However, many others I have listed from this estate do come w/ their original boxes.
